Entry Door Finishing Instructions: 3 Easy Steps

IS THE COLOR RIGHT? Apply the stain to the fiberglass sample included with this kit before
staining your door.

1. Prep Your Door
Good "prep work" means better results. Be sure to:

Above (Fig.A)
Right (Fig. B)

- Remove all hardware from the door and mask off all weatherstripping and glass. (Fig. A)
- Clean the door, sidelites and frame with a mild household detergent. Rinse with water and
dry thoroughly. (Fig. B)
- Paint the white glass frame with the tan primer provided in this kit.
- Make sure all surfaces are completely dry before going to Step 2.

CHECK THE COLOR! It's best to start light. If a darker shade is desired, apply a second coat.
Be sure to wait 8 hours before applying second coat.

2. Time to Stain
Staining the door

Protect the underside of the door by laying it flat on padded sawhorses or another padded
surface.

With the stir sticks, stir stain well and apply with the lintfree cloth included. (Fig. D) Start in the
middle of each panel and use a circular motion to work the stain to the edges. For best results,
follow the staining order shown below.

Once you have the color you want, smooth out any extra stain. Use the dry china bristle brush
provided and work in the direction of the grain. (Fig. E) Dab the corners with the brush to work
out any extra stain that collects there. As stain builds up on the brush use a clean rag to
remove it. Clean the brush when you're done, using the mineral spirits.

Staining or painting the door frame (jamb)

If you purchased a door with:

- An unfinished frame (jamb) - you can either stain (see below) or paint the frame with a quality
latex base paint.
- A primed frame (jamb) - you'll need to paint the frame with a tan primer to stain, or a latex
base paint to seal.

There are two ways to stain an unfinished frame:

- Dilute the gel stain in a separate container with a small amount of mineral spirits. Apply the
stain with a brush. Or...
- Use the gel as is, without diluting. Apply the stain with the lint-free cloth provided, and then
use long strokes with the brush to smooth out any excess stain.

DRYING TIME. It can take between 8 and 16 hours for the stain to dry. The best drying
conditions are temperatures between 50o and 90oF, and humidity between 65% and 70%.

3. Apply Top Coat

(Fig. F) After the stain is dry, clean the door of any dust or lint. Stir the varnish well and apply
it with a clean dry china bristle brush. (Fig. F) For best results, apply two or three coats,
allowing each to dry for at least 8 and 16 hours before applying the next coat. See additional
instructions on the varnish label.
